15 Second Typing Speed Test

Quick warm-up before longer sessions. Short bursts of practice build muscle memory faster than long sessions. Try a few rounds then move to 30 seconds.

Free Online Typing Speed Test

TypeRift is a clean, distraction-free typing test built for focus. No sign-up, no clutter — just start typing. Your words per minute, accuracy percentage, and a live WPM progression graph appear the moment the timer ends.

How It Works

The timer starts automatically on your first keystroke. Choose a duration from 15 seconds to 5 minutes, and a text mode: everyday words, famous quotes, real code snippets, or pure numbers. When time runs out, your results pop in with a satisfying animation. Your personal best is saved locally so you can track your progress over time.

Why Practice Typing Speed?

Typing is the most used skill in the modern workplace. Whether you are writing emails, coding, chatting, or taking notes, faster typing means more productivity. Studies show that improving from 40 WPM to 70 WPM saves over 20 minutes per day of pure typing time. Over a year, that is more than 120 hours saved — three full work weeks.

Beyond speed, accuracy matters enormously. Every typo requires a correction that takes 2-3x longer than typing the character correctly in the first place. Practicing with TypeRift trains both speed and accuracy simultaneously.

Typing as a Game

The best way to improve is to make practice feel like play. TypeRift tracks your personal best for every mode and duration, so you are always competing against yourself. The WPM graph at the end of each test shows your speed curve — did you start slow and warm up, or did you peak early and fade? Analyzing your patterns helps you improve strategically.

Challenge your friends by sharing your score after each test. Can they beat your WPM? The competitive element makes regular practice addictive in the best way.

What is WPM?

WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It is calculated as (correctly typed characters / 5) / time in minutes. The average adult types 40-50 WPM. Above 70 WPM is considered fast, and 100+ is expert level. Learn more about WPM or see how you compare to average typing speeds by age and profession.

Unique Modes

Blind Type blurs the screen after a few seconds — you type completely blind, then see the dramatic reveal at the end. It is TypeRift's signature mode and the most fun to share. Mirror Type flips the text horizontally for an extreme brain challenge. Code Mode uses real JavaScript, Python, and SQL snippets for developers who want to type faster where it counts.

Tips to Type Faster

First, learn proper finger placement on the home row (ASDF JKL;). Second, never look at the keyboard — train your eyes to stay on the screen. Third, practice for 10-15 minutes daily rather than one long session per week. Consistency beats intensity. Fourth, focus on accuracy before speed. Fast but sloppy typing is actually slower than moderate but clean typing because of correction time.

Start with practice mode (no timer) to build confidence, then benchmark with timed tests.
